Oily and Combination Skin
Caring for oily and combination skin
This guide is meant as advice only and is based on Olivia Klein products and their use. It is not intended to replace medical treatment in any way. Skin problems should always be treated under the guidance of a trained medical professional. Please consult with your physician on the safe use of cosmetic products while you are on medication or any type of treatment for a skin condition.
Typical signs of oily skin are increased sebum excretion, enlarged pores, shininess and impurities. Oily skin can also be dry; clear dry patches presenting on oily skin is referred to as combination skin. When the surface of oily skin dries it becomes flaky, red and its pores become tight and contracted. The pores will keep attempting to restore the skin’s suppleness by increasing the production of sebum.
The most important thing when caring for oily skin is to achieve the ideal moisture content and normalise the skin’s functions. Choosing the correct skin care products is absolutely vital to avoid encouraging the skin to produce more sebum than is necessary.
When cleansing oily and combination skin, it’s extremely important not to dry the skin out as excessive dryness can cause the skin to overproduce sebum, leading to increased oiliness and impurities. Hot water can dry and irritate the skin, so always use warm water. For a light cleanse and to freshen up the skin it’s best to use a hydrating toner, as this retains the skin’s natural pH and supports the absorption of skin care products.
Choose your cleansing product on a daily, as-needed basis. When in need of oil control, we recommend our Acne Wash cleansing gel, which contains activated charcoal, several natural extracts and tea tree oil, which help to deep cleanse impurities, soothe inflammation, minimise the look of pores and control excess sebum production.
Once the skin is calm, we recommend swapping to our milder everyday Jelly Wash cleansing gel, which will cleanse the skin gently and leave it feeling fresh and matte. Jelly Wash is also suitable for make-up removal but removing highly pigmented make-ups might require a double cleanse.
Facial deep cleansing
Regular exfoliation, masks and oil treatments help the skin achieve an ideal moisture balance and normalise the overproduction of sebum. We recommend exfoliating oily and combination skin 2—3 per week in order to ensure that follicles do not get clogged by the layer of dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of the skin.
Our clay and baking soda Deep Peel exfoliation powder gently peels and absorbs impurities off the surface of the skin. Our charcoal-based Detox Masque is a super gentle, hydrating cream mask that leaves the skin moisturised, soft and supple, while minimising the look of pores.
Oil cleansing is an effective way to deep cleanse persistent impurities and blackheads. It also works wonders for treating excessive oiliness, as oil cleansing leaves the skin moisturised and helps normalise the overproduction of sebum caused by excessive dryness.
Bath and shower
The skin requires the gentlest wash possible so that the overproduction of sebum can normalise. Avoid using hot water, daily baths or showers and strong cleansers, so that the skin barrier remains intact. A healthy skin barrier upholds the skin’s natural moisture balance and immunity, significantly reducing skin problems such as dryness, roughness and excessive oiliness.
We recommend opting for oil cleansing when washing oily and combination skin, as it leaves the skin soft and supple while helping normalise the skin’s natural sebum production. You can improve your oil cleanse by using a cleansing cloth to gently exfoliate the skin and improve superficial blood circulation.
If you are suffering from impurities and oiliness on the body, we recommend using our charcoal cleansing gel infrequently, as needed. When the skin is calm, swap to a milder, sulphate-free shower gel. Please keep in mind that it is extremely important you replenish the skin’s moisture and pH by applying a toner and moisturiser after each wash.
Toners are an important part of every successful skin care routine. Toners are packed with hydrating and nourishing ingredients that care for the skin while also restoring the skin’s pH and supporting the effects and absorption of other skin care products. Always spray the skin moist with toner before applying moisturiser; this way, you’ll reduce the amount of moisturiser you need and make your product last much longer. This also reduces itchiness and burning caused by applying product directly onto inflamed or irritated skin.
Our Acne Spray Toner contains alpha hydroxy acids, essential oils and natural extracts, and is specifically designed to help control impurities and oiliness. It promotes the natural peeling of the skin, soothes inflammation and minimises the look of pores. We recommend using Acne Spray Toner only as needed.
As part of your daily moisturising routine, we recommend our sea salt and hyaluronic acid Mineral Spray Toner, which hydrates and softens the skin and helps control impurities and oiliness. For a milder alternative, try our aloe vera-rich Hydra Spray Toner.
Facial skin care
Daily moisturising is essential to improving the skin’s moisture content and replenishing a damaged skin barrier. Apply toner and moisturiser in moderation several times a day to avoid over-treating the skin, and to gauge the exact needs of your skin on a day-to-day basis.
Our light, deep hydrating Hydra Lotion is the best choice for frequent, daily moisturising. Our richer, rose water-based Balance Cream is particularly effective for moisturising rough, dry patches as well as soothing irritated and sensitive areas of the skin. Both moisturisers are also suitable for priming water-based and mineral make-ups.
Facial deep treatment
Nourishment-packed serums bring an added boost to your skin care regimen and guarantee the best results. Serums can be used in place of moisturisers or mixed into any of our moisturisers to boost your daily moisturising routine. Monitor your skin’s response daily and choose the correct deep treatment as needed.
Our rooibos extract Balance Serum supports the treatment of impurities and oiliness; it provides the skin with firmness and elasticity, minimises the look of pores and controls sebum production. Our deeply hydrating Hydra Serum contains vitamin B3 and hyaluronic acid, making it perfect for treating dry, rough patches and soothing redness and irritation.
For the delicate skin around the eyes and lips we recommend our Restore Concentrate, which is packed with nourishing oils and keeps the skin soft, moisturised and healthy. Restore Concentrate is also suitable for priming eye make-up.
Body skin care
All of our lotions and creams contain moisturising and softening oils, so choosing the right product depends on the more specific needs of your skin. Base Lotion is a light, quickly absorbing body lotion, which is best suited for daily use when the skin is calm and symptomless. If the skin is presenting with dry patches, apply our softening Optimal Lotion, which promotes the natural peeling of the skin.
A gentle clay wash will help control scalp oiliness and soothe scalp irritation and tenderness caused by impurities. To achieve a clay wash, add a bit of our clay-based exfoliation powder to a mild shampoo and massage the scalp gently. Our pink kaolin clay and sodium bicarbonate hair powder can be sprinkled into the roots to absorb excess oiliness during the day.
Deep cleansing impurities
We recommend using our charcoal cleansing gel as a mask treatment for treating individual impurities, inflamed hair follicles and small problem areas. Apply a small amount of gel onto the desired area and let dry. If necessary, the gel can be left to set overnight. Remove the gel with toner and a cotton pad and moisturise.
During the day, the skin can be treated with our soothing aloe vera and antioxidant-rich blueberry extract hydration gel. The gel helps alleviate the symptoms of inflammation and irritation. For extra soothing power, the gel can be kept in the refrigerator before use.
