Caring for mature skin

This guide is meant as advice only and is based on Olivia Klein products and their use. It is not intended to replace medical treatment in any way. Skin problems should always be treated under the guidance of a trained medical professional. Please consult with your physician on the safe use of cosmetic products while you are on medication or any type of treatment for a skin condition.

Protecting the skin, moisturising regularly and taking steps to prevent skin damage with frequent and regular care are the most important factors when caring for mature skin. As we age, the structure of our skin begins to loosen, thin and dry, making it essential that we support the skin’s functions in every way we can.

Ageing may also cause the skin to become sensitive and the use of strong skin care products may start to cause different symptoms. Rosacea, which presents as small red spots on the face, can turn into a constant nuisance, and adult acne is one of the most challenging skin conditions to treat.

Careful cleansing, exfoliation and maintaining a good moisture content, combined with frequent deep treatment help the skin renew and stay as vital as possible. Exfoliation, mask treatments and skin serums should all form a regular part of your skin care routine.

Facial cleansing

Avoid cleansing the skin with nothing but water, as water can make the skin dry out. For a light cleanse and to freshen up the skin it’s best to use a hydrating toner, as this retains the skin’s natural pH and supports the absorption of skin care products.

For everyday cleansing, we recommend our gentle Sensitive Wash cleansing gel. Sensitive Wash contains oat straw extract and organic honey, which help the skin retain moisture, leaving it feeling soft and supple. Sensitive Wash is also suitable for make-up removal, but highly pigmented make-ups may require a double cleanse.

Using a facial cleansing cloth is a great way to improve your cleanse and gently exfoliate dead skin cells off the surface of the skin and stimulate superficial blood circulation. Always use warm water as got water may dry and irritate the skin and avoid rubbing the skin too harshly.

Facial deep cleansing

Regular exfoliation, masks and oil treatments help the skin rejuvenate and maintain an ideal moisture balance. When exfoliating mature skin, make sure to avoid areas that are particularly sensitive or delicate, and focus on thicker areas of the skin, such as the chin and nose. For deep cleansing the entire face, we recommend mask treatments and oil cleansing.

Our clay-based exfoliation powder gently peels the skin, stimulates superficial blood circulation and absorbs impurities. Our charcoal-based Detox Masque is a mild cream-based cleansing mask that soothes the skin and leaves it soft and supple. Oil cleansing is an effective way to deep cleanse the skin as it leaves the skin smooth and hydrated without the need to add moisturiser.

Bath and shower

Mature skin should be washed as gently as possible. Avoid using hot water, daily baths or showers and strong cleansers, so that the skin barrier remains intact. A healthy skin barrier upholds the skin’s natural moisture balance and immunity, ensuring that the skin stays as strong and vital as possible.

We recommend you primarily use cream or oil cleansers, as they leave the skin soft and moisturised. For a quick, light shower you can also use a mild, sulphate-free shower gel, but then it’s extremely important you replenish the skin’s moisture content and pH by applying a toner and moisturiser afterwards.

Avoid exfoliating the body too harshly, especially if the skin is delicate or damaged. The gentlest possible exfoliation method is using a cleansing cloth with a cream or oil cleanser. This will help stimulate superficial blood circulation and ease dryness and flakiness.

Toners are an important part of every successful skin care routine. Toners are packed with hydrating and nourishing ingredients that care for the skin while also restoring the skin’s pH and supporting the effects and absorption of other skin care products. Always spray the skin moist with toner before applying moisturiser; this way, you’ll reduce the amount of moisturiser you need and make your product last much longer. This also reduces itchiness and burning caused by applying product directly onto sensitive, delicate skin.

All of our toners contain nourishing and hydrating ingredients, so choosing the right one depends on the more specific needs of your skin. Our rose water-based Sensitive Spray Toner efficiently soothes irritation and redness. Our Mineral Spray Toner contains kelp extracts, sea salt and hyaluronic acid, making it perfect for providing dull, dry skin with a boost of hydration and minerals.

Facial skin care

Daily moisturising is essential to improving the skin’s moisture content and replenishing a damaged skin barrier. Apply toner and moisturiser in moderation several times a day to avoid over-treating the skin, and to gauge the exact needs of your skin on a day-to-day basis.

Our rose water-based Balance Cream efficiently soothes redness and irritation and helps the skin achieve the perfect moisture content. Our vitamin-rich Vitamin Cream is packed with nourishing oils that soften the skin, support the rejuvenation of ageing and damaged skin and boost the skin’s vitality and immunity. Both moisturisers are also suitable for priming make-up.

Facial deep treatment

Nourishment-packed serums bring an added boost to your skin care regimen and guarantee the best results. Serums can be used in place of moisturisers or mixed into any of our moisturisers to boost your daily moisturising routine. Monitor your skin’s response daily and choose the correct deep treatment as needed.

Our nourishing Vitamin Serum is packed with vitamin C, which boosts collagen synthesis and supports the skin’s vitality and rejuvenation. Our deeply hydrating Hydra Serum contains vitamin B3 and hyaluronic acid, making it perfect for treating dry, rough patches and soothing redness and irritation.

For the delicate skin around the eyes and lips we recommend our Restore Concentrate, which is packed with nourishing oils and keeps the skin soft, moisturised and healthy. Restore Concentrate is also suitable for priming eye make-up.

For improving the appearance of fine lines and scars we recommend our Revive Concentrate. It contains plenty of DMAE, which leaves the skin firm and supple, and MSM, which supports the formation of healthy skin tissue and prevents the reduction of collagen production. Revive Concentrate must be used regularly to uphold results, so we recommend daily use, for example as part of your night-time skin care routine.

Body skin care

All of our lotions and creams contain moisturising and softening oils, so choosing the right product depends on the more specific needs of your skin. The best choice for dry, flaky skin is our Optimal Lotion, which contains milk powder and organic honey and helps promote the natural peeling of the skin. Our extremely light Base+ Lotion contains Roman chamomile flower oil, which is effective at soothing irritation and itchiness.

We recommend regular oil treatment to support the skin’s vitality. Our Oil Wash & Care is packed with nourishing, vitamin E-rich oils, which moisture and soften the skin, support regeneration and strengthen the skin against oxidative stress.

Treating acne symptoms

Our acne family products soothe inflammation, irritation and excess oiliness, and can be used for the infrequent treatment of acne symptoms. Monitor the skin’s needs daily and choose the correct skin care products on an as-needed basis. As soon as the skin is calm and symptomless, we recommend swapping back to your normal skin care routine.

Please remember that a sudden onset of oiliness can be caused by the skin having dried out, which has led the skin to overproduce sebum. Therefore, when treating oiliness, don’t neglect to moisturise frequently and only use acne care products when necessary.

For treating individual impurities, inflamed hair follicles and small problem areas, we recommend using our charcoal cleansing gel as a mask treatment. Spread a small amount of gel onto the desired area and let dry. If necessary, the gel can be left to set overnight. Remove the gel with toner and a cotton pad and moisturise. If the skin is particularly sensitive, the same treatment can be accomplished using our milder charcoal cleansing mask.

Soothing itchiness and irritation

Our aloe vera and blueberry hydration gel is fantastic for soothing irritated, itchy and hot skin. Our kelp extract and sea salt toner relieves persistent itchiness instantly. To boost their soothing effects, keep the products in the refrigerator before use.
