Dry and Eczema-prone Skin

Caring for Dry and Eczema-prone Skin

This guide is meant as advice only and is based on Olivia Klein products and their use. It is not intended to replace medical treatment in any way. Skin problems should always be treated under the guidance of a trained medical professional. Please consult with your physician on the safe use of cosmetic products while you are on medication or any type of treatment for a skin condition.

Itchiness, rough patches and flakiness are all typical of dry and eczema-prone skin. Despite the skin requiring constant care, its symptoms can be soothed and even prevented with the correct treatment and products. We emphasize three things when caring for dry and eczema-prone skin: cleansing, exfoliation and hydration. Hot water can cause the skin to dry out even more, so it’s best to use warm water. Avoid rubbing the skin too harshly, and instead of soap it’s best to use a cream or oil cleanser that protects the skin from drying out.

Dry, scaly and flaky skin should be gently exfoliated a few times a week so that the surface of the skin gets to rejuvenate and skin care products are able to absorb properly. Too rich a cream might irritate the skin, so instead of the thickest possible moisturiser it’s best to choose a light and effective moisturising lotion and apply it several times per day. Applying skin care products onto skin sprayed moist with toner will ease stinging, itchiness and burning.

Facial cleansing

Avoid cleansing the skin with nothing but water, as water can make the skin dry out. For a light cleanse and to freshen up the skin it’s best to use a hydrating toner, as this retains the skin’s natural pH and supports the absorption of other skin care products.

For everyday cleansing, we recommend our gentle Sensitive Wash cleansing gel. Sensitive Wash contains oat straw extract and organic honey, which help the skin retain moisture, leaving it feeling soft and supple. Sensitive Wash is also suitable for make-up removal, but highly pigmented make-ups may require a double cleanse.

Using a facial cleansing cloth is a great way to improve your cleanse and gently exfoliate dead skin cells off the surface of the skin, providing relief to the flakiness caused by dry skin. Always use warm water as hot water can dry out, irritate or damage the skin.

Facial deep cleansing

Regular exfoliation as well as masks and oil treatments help dry skin achieve ideal moisture levels. Our clay-based Deep Peel exfoliation powder efficiently removes the dead skin cells that collect on the surface of the skin and cleanses the skin gently. When exfoliating, focus particularly on calloused areas so that the healthy skin underneath gets to replenish and skin care products can absorb properly.

If you are suffering from atopic dermatitis, use a cleansing mask instead of exfoliating. Our charcoal-based Detox Masque is extremely gentle, and it cleanses, hydrates and soothes the skin. Oil cleansing is a fantastic alternative to gel cleansers for dry and eczema-prone skin, as it deep cleanses efficiently and leaves the skin moisturised and soft without the need to apply moisturiser.

Bath and shower

Dry and eczema-prone skin should be washed as gently as possible. Avoid using hot water, daily baths or showers and strong cleansers, so that the skin barrier remains intact. A healthy skin barrier upholds the skin’s natural moisture balance and immunity, significantly easing symptoms such as dryness, roughness and irritation.

We recommend you primarily use cream or oil cleansers, as they leave the skin soft and moisturised. For a quick, light shower you can also use a mild, sulphate-free shower gel, but then it’s extremely important you replenish the skin’s moisture content and pH by applying toner and moisturiser afterwards.

Body exfoliation

When treating calloused areas of skin on the body, we recommend using our exfoliation powder together with a gentle cleansing gel. Only exfoliate areas that require it and avoid areas presenting with dermatitis. A cleansing cloth is the gentlest method for exfoliating the body and improving superficial blood circulation. Massaging the skin lightly with the cloth and a cream or oil cleanser provides the best relief for dry, flaky skin.

Toners are an important part of every successful skin care routine. Toners are packed with hydrating and nourishing ingredients that care for the skin while also restoring the skin’s pH and supporting the effects and absorption of other skin care products. Always spray the skin moist with toner before applying moisturiser; this way, you’ll reduce the amount of moisturiser you need and make your product last much longer. This also reduces itchiness and burning caused by applying product directly onto dry, irritated skin.

The best choices for moisture replenishment are our deeply hydrating, aloe vera-rich Hydra Spray Toner and Mineral Spray Toner, which contains sea salt and hyaluronic acid.

Facial skin care

Daily moisturising is essential to improving the skin’s moisture content and replenishing a damaged skin barrier. Apply toner and moisturiser in moderation several times a day to avoid over-treating the skin, and to gauge the exact needs of your skin on a day-to-day basis. Nourishment-packed serums bring an added boost to your skin care regimen and guarantee the best results. Serums can be used in place of moisturisers or mixed into any of our moisturisers to boost your daily moisturising routine.

Our light and quickly absorbing Hydra Lotion is the best choice for everyday moisturising and for priming light, day-time make-up. Our richer Vitamin Cream is packed with nourishing oils and vitamins and softens the skin effectively while supporting the healing of dermatitis as well as skin damaged or cracked by dryness. Our deeply hydrating Hydra Serum contains plenty of vitamin B3 and hyaluronic acid, making it perfect for replenishing moisture, strengthening the skin barrier and supporting the healing of atopic dermatitis.

For flakiness and dermatitis on the skin around the eyes or lips we recommend using our extra light, quickly absorbing Restore Concentrate, which has been specially developed for delicate skin. Apply a very thin layer of concentrate around the eyes and avoid the eyelids, unless you are targeting dermatitis. Restore Concentrate is packed with nourishing, softening oils and doubles as an eye make-up primer.

Body skin care

All of our lotions and creams contain moisturising and softening oils, so choosing the right product depends on the more specific needs of your skin. The best choice for combating dryness and flakiness is our Optimal Lotion, which contains milk powder and organic honey and helps promote the natural peeling of the skin. Our extremely light Base+ Lotion contains Roman chamomile flower oil, which is effective at soothing irritation and itchiness. If the skin is presenting with atopic dermatitis or discoid eczema, we recommend using our Prime Cream, a rich goat milk body cream.

Regular use of a cream mask is the best way to moisturise and soften hardened, scaly patches of skin and relieve flakiness. A moisturising oil is a great alternative for quickly moisturising crusty or rough skin areas.

Scalp care

A gentle clay wash will ease itchiness and flakiness caused by a dry scalp. Add a bit of our clay exfoliation powder to a mild shampoo and massage the scalp lightly. Avoid using this method if the scalp is presenting with dermatitis or irritation. In such cases, we recommend using a moisturising and softening cream mask instead.

Soothing itchiness and irritation

Our aloe vera and blueberry hydration gel is fantastic for soothing irritated, itchy and hot skin. Our kelp extract and sea salt toner relieves persistent itchiness instantly. To boost their soothing effects, keep the products in the refrigerator before use.
